Vónin Storm

Bottom trawl doors

Better in every way

When Vónin began looking to enter the market for trawl doors, the company’s designers started with a list of requirements for a new door design that would meet the needs of demersal trawlers working on tough grounds, and in areas where sea ice can be a regular challenge.

The result is the Storm design, a combination of a semi-pelagic design and a conventional bottom door a so-called hybrid trawl door, which has the capability of being towed on relatively little warp and can be lifted so that they skim the seabed during the tow if this is a requirement.

Outstanding stability and excellent spread

Storm doors have already acquired a reputation for their exceptional spreading power, and are being used across a variety of fisheries, with single-, twin and triple-rig trawlers using these doors. Skippers report that Storm doors provide excellent spread, including at relatively low towing speeds when fishing for shrimp, and that it is noticeable that these doors maintain the same spread in shallow water as they have on deeper fishing grounds

Judging by the feedback from skippers fishing with Storm doors, these doors have outstanding stability, staying fully upright and keeping the gear open even in a full 180° turn, with only a minimal loss of spread. Even when a tow is interrupted, the stability and balance of the Storm doors is such that they are up and fishing again as soon as the tow is resumed.

Toughest on the market

Nothing has been spared when it came to making the Storm doors among the toughest on the market. These are built with full double-sided welding on every edge, carried out according to rigorous certified weld procedures, and this has paid off as the working lifetime of a pair of Storm doors has extended far beyond what can usually be expected. Customers who in the past had expected to be buying a new set of doors at 12-15 month intervals have found that the working lifetime has roughly doubled to around 28 months.

“We are using a set of 7,5m2 Storm trawl doors from Vónin. They are very stable on low speeds as well as having a extremly good spreading force. An extra plus is that the trawl doors are remarkably well made and very strong and the doors have no dents or any cracks in the weldings.”
