A step toward a cleaner ocean

Two full-size fish farming cages made entirely from recycled nylon are now in use at Grieg Seafood in Norway. This marks a major milestone in the Circular Fish Farming Nets (CFFN) project — proving that recycled nylon can be used to create high-quality aquaculture equipment.

The project was a collaboration between Hampidjan Group (Vónin), Nofir, AKVA Group, Aquafil, and Grieg Seafood, with strong contributions from Vónin and its sister companies. Drawing on their deep expertise in net production and aquaculture gear, they helped turn the idea of circular nylon nets into reality.

Why It Matters

This project shows how the aquaculture industry can move toward a circular economy by:

The recycled nylon is processed into ECONYL® yarn — a high-quality material made from nets that have reached the end of their service life. The project was supported by the Norwegian Retailer’s Environment Fund (Handelens Miljøfond).

Looking Ahead

Hampidjan Group and Vónin continue to work closely with partners and customers to find sustainable solutions for all materials used in aquaculture and fisheries — including nylon, PE, PP, rubber, and metal. This project is yet another example of Vónin’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
