Very good Shrimp fishery in Greenland

The Greenlandic trawler 'Akamalik' has in 9 days caught 473 tonnes of Shrimp in West Greenland. They will be offloading in Sisimiut.

The 'Akamalik' has since late summer 2007 been using two Vónin2007 trawls. They are quite large - 3895 meshes in 40mm. In February 2008 they ordered the third one and the captains have expressed great satisfaction with the trawls.

The Vónin2007 trawl has been a success ever since its launching in the Spring of 2007.

Good catch, light to tow and easy to maintain are some of the things that make the trawl a good investment. In addition to the Vónin trawls, the 'Akamalik' is also using the Vónin 2007 sorting grids. These have also proven to be the #1 sorting grids for Shrimp.

'Akamalik' is using 14.5m2 Injector Scorpion trawldoors weighing 6400kgs.

Good results with Stealth F15 from Injector Trawldoors

This is the second trip the pelagic trawler Fagraberg is using/testing the new pelagic doors Stealth F15 from Injector Trawldoors and the feedbacks have been very positive.

From Fagraberg: The Stealth F15 has been very good. We have gone from 15 m2 to 13 m2. We could even go down to 12 m2 with out any problem. These doors are powerful doors. We increased our speed from 3,6/3,7 knots to 4 knots without using more fuel. We could have chosen to save fuel by using the same speed as before, but we choose to increase our speed without using more fuel.

To be able to do backside adjustments on the wire side is FANTASTIC. It took us only a few minutes to make adjustments to the doors, whereas before we could not do some adjustments before lying on the quayside. This is the future. No doubt.

We have never tried pelagic door so powerful on shallow waters. At 70 fv we had no problem getting the spread we needed, which is impressive.

New design - better results

The new Vónin 2007 shrimp trawl from the trawl company Vónin® has a different design than other shrimp trawls. The mesh bar cuts in the forenet and belly is constructed differently than other shrimp trawls and the headline and groundrope are parallel. The shrimp trawler Artic Viking uses the Vónin 2007 shrimp trawl with 3350 meshes, which are 400 meshes larger than they normally use in East Greenland shrimp fishery. According to skipper Bjarni Petersen, the new trawl design is free from shrimps in the side panels, which makes it possible to tow faster with the same engine power.

Bjarni Petersen, skipper of the shrimp trawler 'Artic Viking':

“With the new Vónin 2007 shrimp trawl we are able to tow 0,3 miles per hour faster with the same engine power. This means that the trawl has a better water flow and the water pressure is much less within the trawl, which makes the trawl easy and flexible to operate where the ocean current is strong. The time we have used the Vónin 2007 we have experianced the the trawl has an excellent bottom contact and very stabile in rough bottoms.

Furthermore, with Vónin 2007, we are able to increase speed without loosing the horizontal opening. And the important factor is that Vónin 2007 has an excellent fishing capability, so good that we have caught more than other vessels in same area and this is not usual”.

This new highly fuel saving trawl design will add significant value to our business and we will together with skippers, continuously develop new designs, which reduces oil consumption and increases fishing capability at the same time, says Vónin’s Marketing Manager Eystein Elttør.

RED LION introduced at SINTEF flume tank in Hirtshals

2. February 2007 Vónin Ltd. introduced the new Redfish trawl 'RED LION®' at the SINTEF flume tank in Hirtshals, together with the new trawl doors 'Stealth F15' from Injector A/s. Skippers and first mates sailing with Faroese, Icelandic, Norwegian and Greenlandic trawlers were present when the RED LION® was tested in the flume tank.

The day began with a power point introduction of the RED LION®, were trawl design, material and facts on fishing capability of the trawl were highlighted. The facts were based on the tryout onboard the vessel Fagraberg in September 2006 in 'Smuthavet' North-East of Faroe Islands, where other vessels such as Skálaberg, Ran, Enniberg, Polonus and Baldvin T. were fishing.

After a good presentation from Vónin's sales representative Rógva Joensen, Injector A/s Managing Director Jan Allan Muller explained about the new Stealth F15. After lunch the RED LION® undertook more than 12 tests in the flume tank and "passed them all" as Polar Nanoq skipper Hjarnar K. Dalsgaard said. The model tested was a RED LION® 2048 metre with 64 metre meshes in front panel, scale 1:64

Using a 20 degree Angle Of Attack (AOA) the Stealth F15 achieved a 312 metre spread between the doors with a towing speed of 2,8 knots. This is a very low and unusual AOA. Normal AOA in these towing circumstances is 28-30 degrees. The conversation between the visitors during the day was very positive. They wereimpressed how stable the trawl was in the flume tank and how the mesh structures were within the trawl, from the for-net to the belly. The horizontal and vertical opening of the trawl was exactly what the visitors wanted to see, maybe better than expected.

In the evening Vónin Ltd. and Injector A/S invited all visitors to a fine dinner at Skaga Hotel in Hirtshals.

Line Thrower L-75.

The new line thrower L-75 is produced by Line Thrower sp/f based in Klaksvík - Faroe Islands. The person behind the design is 35 year old Andras Samson from Klaksvík. As a fisherman for several years, Andras saw the need to find a tool that could simplify the task to get lines across to other vessels, safely, quickly and efficiently. At first, the line thrower was aimed to the pair-trawling industry. However, inquiries indicate that supply vessels and ferries also see this product as the solution to simplify the task "line throwing".

As the line thrower L-75 is operating with an air pressure of 10 bars, makes it safe to handle. The L-75 can throw up to 100 metres and is the first of its kind where the user is able to regulate the shot distance with the trigger. The line thrower consists of plastic and stainless steel, which makes the product perfect in the rough environment at the sea.

Above right: Andras Samson is preparing the line thrower.

Above: Line Thrower L-75

The first line throwers were sold to the pair trawling vessels "Navarin" and "Borgarin" from Klaksvík. According to the skipper, the Line Thrower L-75 has been a great success. Both in terms of the time getting the line across to the other vessel and that they do not need to get close to each other to get the line across. The skipper also highlighted, that being able to avoid close operation with another vessel at sea, will reduce the risk for vessels to bump into each other and will save the company time and costs in terms of repairing damage on vessels.

Vónin Bacalao trawl once again a winner.

Since the trawler Baldvin Þorsteinsson, EA10 of Akureyri purchased a Bacalao 720 trawl earlier this year, it has been a great success, both in terms of fishing, oil reduction and trawl repairs, says skipper Guðmundur.

Although, Bacalao 720 trawl is larger than normal used trawl fishing for Greenland Halibut, South West of Iceland (Torgið), the trawl, having Dyneema headline, is lighter to tow and easier to operate. And the trawl has a 9 metre vertical height when towing.

Vónin P/F purchase Royal Greenland trawl manufacture activities

Vónin P/F has purchased Royal Greenland’s trawl manufacturing business in Nuuk.

According to Royal Greenland’s, Managing Director, Henrik Leth, the decision to sell this part of the business, is based on, that Royal Greenland does not consider manufacture and sales of fishing equipment to be a part of the company’s core business strategy. The company also believe that the long term product development of trawl will gain a more competitive advantage to be in the ownership of a company, which has the knowledge and expertise to manufacture and sell fishing equipments. This is the reason we decided to sell our trawl manufacture related activities to Vónin P/F, says Henrik Leth.

Vónin has branches in Fuglajørð and in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, Nuuk, Greenland and Port-de-Grave, Newfoundland. The purchase of Royal Greenland’s trawl manufacturing activities, will add value to our business in Greenland.

Vónin will continue to build upon existing development in Nuuk and add new fishing gear designs to the business, such as the development of a new shrimp-trawl, which is more fuel and material efficient.

New sorting system for Blue Whiting fishery

Vónin’s new sorting system for Blue Whiting fishery consists of a four sided net tunnel, with a flexible grid fitted inside. This selects larger fish from the Blue Whiting. The larger fish, which do not pass through the grid, swim out through an opening in the bottom.

Advantages
The greatest advantage with this grid compared with the usual steel- and plast grids is, that you don't need to show any special care while taking the gear on board, as the sorting section is reeled on to the net drum with the rest of the trawl, without suffering any damage.

This advantageus type of grid, which is used worldwide in the fishfarming industry, is now, for the first time, being used as equipment on Blue Whiting trawlers.

The sorting section has been on trial on board pelagic vessels, and complies with all demands set for Blue Whiting fishery.

25. May 2005
Numerous pelagic trawls on the international market

As the Blue Whiting fishing has been successful this spring, it has, at the same time, created a demand for new satisfactory equipment.

Vónin has over the years designed and manufactured trawls and codends. We have lately developed a new type of trawl, at the same time using a new material, which is stronger as well as fuel saving.

Pelagic trawls from Vónin are also being used while fishing Herring in the North Atlantic. This is a good combination, as you benefit by using the same equipment for both fisheries.

The foreign vessels that have been supplied with trawls from Vónin over the past year are primerily from Iceland, as well as some from Holland. In addition Ireland, Scotland and Sweden have also been supplied with pelagic gear.

Our first priorities are catching abilities, quality and service. This is what Vónin stands for!

20. May 2005
Shrimp trawls with fishing ability

In spite of the fact, that the shrimp fishery has been and partly still is in a deep trough, it is however necessary to achieve the best result. The shipowners have certainly experienced this, due to the continuing low prices on shrimps.

The trawl makers Vónin, being one of the largest suppliers of fishing equipment to the North Atlantic shrimp fleet, is aware of the recession in the shrimp industry. We have at the same time been looking for new markets. The export of shrimp trawls and other gear has increased these past few years, especially to Greenland and Canada.

Lately we delivered two Vónin 2000 shrimp trawls with 3000 meshes, and three bags to the canadian trawler 'Atlantic Enterprise'. Recently we also delivered two shrimp trawls with 3600 meshes, two sorting grids and two shrimp bags to the Greenlandic trawler 'Regina C'.

It has always been Vónin's policy to deliver quality. We strive to have the best workmanship, and to be at the forefront of developing new equipment. Alterations to improve trawls and other gear are continually made, in co-operation with the ships crews.

Therefore the trawls from Vónin are superior in the North Atlantic. The main charac-teristics are, that the trawls have a good catching ability and a long lifespan, due to the materials used being solely of the very best quality.

We want to keep a good reputation!

Record landing of Blue Whiting

Earlier this week the pelagic trawler ‘Krúnborg’ of Tórshavn arrived at Fuglafjørð fully loaded with Blue Whiting. Fishing has been good lately west of Ireland in EU-waters, and they filled ‘Krúnborg’ in a few days fishing.

The owners were exited to find out, what the capacity of ‘Krúnborg’ is, after she was lengthened 7 metres in October 2004. Prior to lengthening she carried around 2.500 tonnes.

After discharging all her cargo in around 30 hours, ‘Krúnborg’ had landed 3.193 tonnes of Blue Whiting. This is the largest single load of Blue Whiting ever landed to Havsbrún in Fuglafjørð, and probably the largest landing ever, in the North Atlantic.

The skipper this voyage was Pauli Wang.

‘Krúnborg’ is equipped with two Vónin Pelagic 2048 metres trawls with 32 metres meshes Super 12 twine in the forenet and two codends - one 600 tonnes and one 800 tonnes. After landing she sailed on a new trip to the same fishing grounds.

New pairtrawlers equipped by Vónin

Late Tuesday evening, on the 23rd of November, the new pairtrawlers, “Stjørnan” and “Polarhav”, arrived in their homeport Leirvík. The hulls were built in Poland, and thereafter towed to Iceland, where the ships were completed; “Stjørnan” at Hafnarfjørður and “Polarhav” at Akranes.

The new trawlers are 36,5 metres long and have a beam of 8,5 metres. The main engine is 1000 hp. The total cost of each vessel is approximately 29 million Danish Kroner.

These trawlers, which will solely be engaged in pairtrawling, have their fishing gear supplied by Vónin Ltd. For ground fishing we have supplied them with two 630 mesh ‘Bacalao’ trawls, and two 720 mesh Bacalao trawls with two sets of 21” rockhopper gear. Along with that are two codends with intermediaries. For the Silversmelt fisheries we have supplied two 352 metre ‘Super Height’ trawls. In addition we have supplied the vessels with 2 x 1000 fathoms 26 mm EuroPact trawl wire rope.

“Stjørnan” and “Polarhav” will start fishing for Saith, but, like their predecessors, will also be fishing for Silversmelt in the summer season.

The trawl taken onboard, was a Vónin Pelagic 1920 metre circumference with 48 metre meshes in the forenet. The belly consists of Nylon netting and a few sections of Dyneema netting. The frame is made of Eurosteel and Dyneema. The Codend is also delivered by Vónin.

To fit this large trawl, the ship purchased new 14 square metres Thyborøn trawl doors, type 10.

Since installing the new crane, it was now possible to change both trawl and doors while fishing. It makes the whole operation much easier.

'Frank Bonefaas' used the new trawl while fishing for Blue whiting and Herring in international waters, from north of the Faroes, and as far north as 73 degrees latitude. Blue whiting has been scarce lately, so they concentrated more on catching the remaining Herring quota.

Herring fishing was good at the time, so they had adequate for their production 24 hours a day. The trawl lived up to expectations, and was light to tow, considering the size.

The 'Frank Bonefaas' is now fishing for Horse mackrel, and will be returning to the Blue whiting fishing at the start of the season west of Ireland in the beginning of the New Year

'The Cod has returned to East Greenland.

The faroese factory trawlers ‘Vesturvón’ and ‘Enniberg’ have caught Cod while fishing on the Dohrn Bank in East Greenland. This is part of an agreement of research fishing, which the faroese government has aquired through annual negotiations with the Greenland government.

The trawler ‘Vesturvón’ has caught 60 tonnes of Cod fillets this trip. The Cod disappeared a number of years ago, but it has now been proved, that it has returned.

An other trawler, the ‘Enniberg’, has also returned from East Greenland, after fishing for Redfish, Cod and Black Halibut on this trip. They had aproximately 50 tonnes of Cod fillets as well as a considerable amount of Red Fish and some Black Halibut.

Both ‘Vesturvón’ and ‘Enniberg’ are fishing with trawls from Vónin. ‘Vesturvón’ is using 630 mesh Cod trawl and ‘Enniberg’ is using 2x630 mesh Cod trawls. In addition both vessels are using Halibut gear, 454 mesh Turbot trawls, from Vónin.

It is now every ones wish, that the Cod really has returned to the prior bountiful fishing grounds of Greenland.

"TOR-ÖN" has Bluewhiting equipment from Vónin

The Swedish trawler ‘TOR-ØN’ GG 204, was on Friday the 4th of June in Fuglafirði to take onboard a new Bluewhiting trawl and codend. After taking onboard the equipment the ship went directly to the fishing grounds north of the Faroes.

The trawl, which ‘TOR-ØN’ has received, has a circumference of 1536 metres and 32 metre meshes in the forenet, made of Tiptolon. The belly is Nylon with a few sections of Dyneema netting. The frame is Eurosteel, Euroflex and Dyneema.

The 68 metre long Nylon codend is covered with two layers of double Nylon netting, and has 35 beckets. The bag holds approximately 500 tonnes of Bluewhiting.

While testing the trawl fishing for herring in arctic waters, their quota of 600 tonnes pluss was caught after four hauls, so ‘TOR-ØN’ could return home after only two days.

The crew of only four, in addition to one trawl specialist from Vónin say, that the trawl adjusted very well in the water, and was easily handled.

"Krúnborg" exceptional results using Pelagic Super 12 trawl.

In March this year, ‘Krúnborg’ took onboard a new ‘Pelagic Super 12’ trawl with a circumference of 2048 metres with 32 metre meshes in the forenet.

The material in the forenet is Super 12, which is a 12 stranded braided material, coloures as required. The belly is in Nylon with Euroflex and Dyneema lines. Some sections of the belly are also in Dyneema netting.

Since March this year, when ‘Krúnborg’ took onboard this trawl, she has made eleven trips, catching a total of more than 27.000 tonnes of Bluewhiting. During this time no repairs have been necessary. The crew’s comments are that the trawl is stable, easy to tow, and has a superb catching ability. This, at the same time, reduces the comsumption of fuel. In all, one of the best trawls ever onboard.

Also two Icelandic pelagic trawlers have received new trawls from Vónin this year. The reports received from these boats are of satisfactory fishing, and a remarkable reduction of fuel consumption due to less towing recistance of the materials used in the trawls.
